1996 Australia Five Dollars Premium Signatures NPA Folder
This folder contains two $5 notes and has been issued by Note Printing Australia to commemorate the change in note signatory.
The $5 note with Fraser / Evans signatures is numbered with the alpha prefix "FE".
The $5 note with Macfarlane / Evans signatures is numbered with the alpha prefix "ME".
The alpha prefixes are followed by the two digits 96 representing the year of production and a further 6 numerals, which are matching on the notes.
Ian Macfarlane was appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia for a term of 7 years, commencing 18 September 1996. He suceeded Bernie Fraser, who was Governor from 18 September 1989 to 17 September 1996.
A delightful folder with 2 highly desirable collectible notes inside of which only 1000 folders were released.
The extremely low serial numbers mark these as the 47th example to be printed which is also a special consideration for collectors.
Bernard William "Bernie" Fraser (born 1941) is an Australian economist and was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia from September 1989 to September 1996.
Fraser joined the Department of the Treasury (Australia) in 1963. He was its London representative from 1969 to 1972. In 1981 Fraser was appointed Director of the National Energy Office. He returned to the Treasury in 1984 and became Secretary from September 1984 to September 1989. Fraser is an independent director of several industry superannuation funds and is a director of Members Equity Bank. He is the Chairman of the Board of the Climate Change Authority.
He has appeared in several television ads in Australia for superannuation funds, notably sporting the catchphrase; "it's the super of the future".
He was educated at Junee High School, the University of New England, Australia and the Australian National University. He has received Honorary Doctorates from the University of New England, Australia and Charles Sturt University, Australia. He is also an honorary Professor of Economics at the University of Canberra.

A remarkable banknote in every way with abundant security features. This note had some extremely special features built into it as security against forgery. It was a world first and makes these notes highly desirable as collectors items. Collectors value numerous variations of this note.The $5 note incorporates the following security features:
Within the clear window is a stylised gum flower printed and it can be seen from either side of the note.
If the note is held up to the light a seven pointed star within a circle is formed by four points on one side of the note combining perfectly with three points on the other.
If the note is held up to the light you can see an image of the Australian Coat of Arms under other printing.
The words FIVE DOLLARS has been microprinted and can be seen with the aid of a magnifying glass.
Slightly raised printing (intaglio) can be felt with the finger and is also used for the portraits and other major design elements.
Highly intricate multi-coloured fine-line patterns and images appear on each side.
Under ultra-violet light the serial number will fluoresce and also a square patch becomes visible on the back of the note.

Watermark: With the introduction of the new polymer banknotes we saw the end of the customary watermark. It was replaced with a Variable Optical Security Device in the bottom corner.
