Duck River Co-operative Butter and Bacon Factory Co. Ltd. at Smithton, Tasmania. The factory opened in 1904 when the farmers of the district formed a co-operative to set up the factory and commenced the making of butter and bacon.

This exchange note for the sum of 12 pounds 3 shillings and 10 pence made payable to John Cornell and Company was issued 4 years after the co-ops founding.  Dated October 24th 1908.

It is in reasonable condition, with only minor damage to the edges and some light staining. Still a very nice example of a banking instrument from early 20th century Tasmania.

Has a nice example of the 6 pence stamp duty stamp adhered.

History

From the Burnie Advocate at a later date in the 1940’s showing the success of a firm that started out producing butter and bacon.

This progressive firm showed in no small measure that it has the ”goods” to offer farmers generally, and all the machinery carried the names of manufacturers famed in the industry.Included in the firm’s exhibit were Bagshaw hay balers, No. 2 and No. 3; Fordson tractor; stump jump and grassland harrows; Bag shaw manure spreaders; Bagshaw corn grinders; Bagshaw hay sweeps; Howard Junior rotary hoe, of 5 h.p.; Ronaldson-Tippett diesel and air-cooled petrol engines; Lister separators; Bamford mowers; and Kelvinator refrigerators,in kerosene and electric models. A newcomer to the exhibit was the Bamford side delivery hay rake. This machine is particularly popular with farmers, but unfortunately at the moment is in short delivery. If i you are interested, then place your order right away. The Duck River Co-op. Company also distributes Oliver tractors, Howard rotary hoes, in 12 in 28 h.p., and Reo motor trucks. The firm is sub-agent for all of Max Geeves’ agricultural implements, and Eclipse milking machines, Field’s seeds and Hallett’s Melrose agricultural lime. Further information and advice will gladly be given on application Ito the Duck River Butter Co-Op, at Smithton.
