1937 Australia One Crown - King George VI - A

A lovely looking coin that has survived remarkably well for its age.

The detail is clean with no rim damage.

There is some light scuffing evident on the reverse but still a great addition to any collection.

King George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions from 11 December 1936 until his death. He was the last Emperor of India (until 1947), the last king of Ireland (until 1949), and the first Head of the Commonwealth.

The Australian Crown was only minted in two years being 1937 and 1938. The denomination is 5 shillings or one crown. Originally the coin was released to celebrate the coronation of King George VI but due its large size and weight proved to be unpopular as a coin for every day useage. Many of the 1937 Crown coins were put aside as keepsakes from the coronation and as a result there are a reasonable number of middle grade coins still around. The 1938 Crown had a mintage of only 100,000 compared with the 1937 mintage of 1 million, hence the 1938 is the more sought after. Never the less both years are desirable in good condition. When looking for condition on these coins the highest point featured is the cross in the orb of the crown and this is the first place to check for overall quality. The coin was discontinued in 1938 due to its low public popularity.
