The Mickey and Friends Limited Edition Disney Collectible coins feature the main Disney characters and are sure to be a big hit with serious collectors and fans alike. The quality of the presentation is great with each coin being displayed in a clear Perspex case. The colours are bright and appealing.

Although Noteworthy does not normally offer items from outside Australia it is understood that these coins were struck by Perth Mint under license from The New Zealand Mint.  The coins have virtually sold out in the first few weeks of the opening offer.

The character depicted in this offer is the ever popular Donald Fauntleroy Duck.

His trade mark sailors suit and bow tie along with his furious short temper and mischievous; suspicious nature have made him one of Disney’s most popular all time characters. No other character in the Disney stable has appeared more often in terms of total appearances in cartoon books and film. He has made appearances other guises most notably as Duck Avenger, Superduck and Frank Duck. His partner Daisy Duck and other members of his family such as Scrooge McDuck, Ludwig von Drake and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie have kept us laughing and entranced for more than 4 generations.

The voice behind the character was created by Clarence Charles ‘Ducky’ Nash and he performed this voice over for over 50 years. He passed away aged 80 in 1985.  he was also the voice of Tom in the famous ‘Tom and Jerry’ series. A star was laid for Donald Duck on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in honour of his screen and book recognition in 2004.

New Zealand Mint chief executive Simon Harding told Agence France-Presse that a 1,000-coin run of one-ounce (28.3 grams) silver Donald Duck coins recently sold out in seven minutes. Harding also said the the mint plans to release a Disney coin on Niue’s behalf next month that contains one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of gold.

Details of the issue have not yet been released but the gold bullion in the coin is worth US$40,000 alone and only 28 will be made.

Niue, a tiny speck of land with a population of about 1,400 that lies 2,400 kilometres (1,500 miles) northeast of New Zealand, receives a royalty on every coin sold, which is expected to deliver revenues of more than US$4.5 million over the next 10 years.

Each coin is individually presented in a Perspex case allowing 360 degree presentation. The coin case is packaged in a film theme box and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.  Certificate number may vary from that displayed.

Each coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality

History

The origins of Donald Duck’s name may have been inspired by Australian cricket legend Donald Bradman.

In 1932 Bradman and the Australian team were touring North America and he made the news after being dismissed for a duck against New York West Indians. Walt Disney was in the process of creating a friend for Mickey Mouse when he possibly read about Bradman’s dismissal in the papers and decided to name the new character “Donald Duck”. Voice performer Clarence Nash auditioned for Walt Disney Studios when he learned that Disney was looking for people to create animal sounds for this cartoons. Disney was particularly impressed with Nash’s duck imitation and chose him to voice the new character. Besides, during that period Mickey Mouse had lost some of his edge since becoming a role model towards children, and so Disney wanted to create a character to portray some of the more negative character traits that could no longer bestow on Mickey. Disney came up with Donald’s iconic attributes including this short-temper and his sailor suit (based on ducks and sailors both being associated with water). While Dick Huemer and Art Babbit were first to animate Donald, Dick Lundy is credited for developing him as a character.

Asteroid 12410 was named after Donald Duck

Donald Duck was temporarily listed as a “hired” employee in the database of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as late as 1978. Given a $99,999 salary — more than double the $47,500 take federal civil servants were legally limited to be paid at the time — the name was unchallenged by a computer intended to catch government payroll fraud. Picked as one of thirty fictitious names by the Government Accounting Office, the use of it was a test to see if the payroll system of the HUD could be manipulated to defraud the government.

According to the INDUCKS, which is a database about Disney comics worldwide, American, Italian and Danish stories have been reprinted in the following countries. In most of them, publications still continue: Australia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark (Faroe Islands), Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guyana, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the former Yugoslavia.
