History

Things to see and do in Horneburg

The Horneburg Castle was a late medieval moated castle from around 1255, which was built on parts of the monastery Harsefeld.

See the bronze sculpture of Isern Hinnerk of Frijo Müller-Belecke on Burgmannshof provides Heinrich von Borch there who lived as Burgmann to Horneburg at the beginning of the 14th century as the archbishop of Bremen Ministerialer. He was a legend amongst Knights. The monument shows how lapwings betrayed his hiding place in the bog of his captors.

The Church of Our Lady, donated by the Horneburger castle men, was first mentioned in 1396. It was destroyed in the Thirty Years War but the church was in 1632 rebuilt and in 1670 several times rebuilt and extended to the south. 1729 was renewed on the old foundations in the Baroque style. In 1739 a new west tower was built. The organ and its prospectus of 1755 were restored in 2000 and extended by a second manual.

The castle on the Castle Park is a manor house belonging to the family of Düring on the Vorburggelände. In 1886 it was converted to a two-storey mansion in Tudor style. The chateau is surrounded by English landscape park whose overall appearance is affected by various allotments.

The two-story town hall with arched windows was built in 1615 as the Horneburger Post Station. In 1862 it was remodelled and plastered.

The Horneburger Bird Collection (near the station) has some 380 birds which is the life work of the hobby taxidermist John Heinßen (1903-2002).

Horneburger Autumn market, or Horneburger horse market, occurs on the 2nd Friday in October.
