Here is a rather nice 50 Pfennig banknote issued as a credit note by the District of Diepholz in 1921.

It has wonderfully historic art work with Lemförde as a town in 1621 and on the other side two knights in armour with a variety of local crests based on the Lemförd and Diepholz crests. The lion on the crests is taken from the original arms of the Count of Diepholz.

Lemförde itself is near Lake Dümmer which is about 15 kilometers from Diepholz itself. This lake is surrounded by fens that support many rare bird species and is a favorite spot for ornithologists from around the world.

A great opportunity to get a notgeld banknote that is not so common.

History

The Dümmer See or Lake Dümmer is not a deep lake it averages only 1 – 1.5 meters in depth and covers an area of almost 14 square kilometers. Dümmer in German means depression, which is pretty much what the lake is. Dykes were built to keep water levels constant. Water sports and swimming are a popular local past time there.

It shallow waters are a haven for wading birds. Surrounding the lake is the Dümmer Nature Park which covers not only the lake but the surrounding fens. In total it is more than 500 square kilometers.

Migratory birds frequent the area which makes it a bird watching heaven.
