History

The Potsdam Garrison Church or Garnisonkirche was the parish church of the Prussian royal family. It was built in the baroque style as a Protestant church and was consecrated in 1732. The church was commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm I and he was duly buried there at his request in the crypt when he died in 1740. In 1786 his son, Frederick the Great died and was buried there against his will.

It has survived fires and more than few historical changes in its time not least of which was a bombing during the blitz of 1945 when allied bombers attacked Berlin.

One of the most beautiful features of the church was its remarkable organ and carillon which were built originally by Joachim Wagner in 1731. Some 130 years later Carl Ludwig Gesell gave it a makeover and increased its registers from 25 to 42. It was an incredible piece of musical equipment for its time. The chimes were designed to imitate angels with kettledrums and trombones. Other adornments included a circling sun and an eagle beating its wings.

After being near totally destroyed in the bombing raid the church saw the replacement of its carillon and casting of new bells in 1991 shortly after the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was unified once again.
