These coins when they were released were a sign of many things to come.

The consolidation of power by the Nazi party meant that the symbol on this coin of the eagle atop a swastika would soon be known and feared around the world.

This example here is a middle grade coin and is priced to sell the basis of this grading. The pictures say it all but a nice coin for a beginning collector of German silver coins.

History

Paul von Hindenburg was born on 2 October 1847 as Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg and died at the age of 86 in 1934. From 1925 until 1934 he was the President of Germany.

He was strongly opposed to Adolf Hitler and referred to him as a “Bohemian corporal”, and despite pressure being brought to bear on him to make Hitler the Chancellor of Germany he repeatedly refused. This refusal posed a quandry for Hitler who wanted nothing more than take power legally. By 1932 under continual pressure from  Meissner, Papen, and the younger Hindenburg he relented and and on the morning of 30 January 1933, Hindenburg swore in Adolf Hitler as Chancellor of Germany at the Presidential Palace.

Hindenberg’s name was also the same one given to the mighty Zeppelin airship. The Hindenberg made 17 round trip crossings of the Atlantic in its one and only year of service. One flight was a record return in five days, 19 hours and 51 minutes. This Zeppelin had a top speed of 135 km/h by way of 4 massive 1200hp Daimler-Benz diesel engines.

The monster airship, after making its first South American trip in 1937 it flew to Lakehurst naval Air Station in North America where it suffered an outbreak of fire just prior to landing, that quickly engulfed the massive 245 meter long structure. People were forced to jump from the airship to the ground to escape the flames and despite best efforts, the blazing airship burnt and crashed. Thirty six lives were lost amongst the 61 crew and 36 passengers on board. Films and documentaries have been made of this dramatic tragedy.
