History

In September 1st in 1939 Germany invaded Poland. The land and air assault included extensive bombing campaigns as well as massive land forces applying offensive strategies along the entire border. Poland stood little to no chance against such massively overwhelming odds. Within 3 days of this action Great Britain began a campaign of bombing Germany and so it was that World war II truly got underway.  By December naval actions were being fought with the German ship, Admiral Graf Spee,  taking on  HMS Ajax, HMNZS Achilles and HMS Exeter at the Battle of the River Plate.

The Admiral Graf Spee was a heavy cruiser class battleship. It was named after Admiral Maximilian von Spee. She was laid down at the Reichsmarinewerft shipyard in Wilhelmshaven in October 1932 and completed by January 1936. It carried six eleven inch guns in two triple gun turrets. Top speed was around 28 knots or 52 km/h.. It was fast, powerful and very hard to damage. It’s nominal name was a Panzer Ship due to its heavy armour plating.
