History

When this note was printed it was done so on Russian controlled territory in the eastern section of Germany that would be known as the G.D.R..

This occurred due to the Yalta Conference which was held in early February of 1945. It has been referred to as the Crimea Conference and it had the war time code name of Argonaut Conference.

The conference was held in Yalta in Crimea  and the purpose of it was to bring together the heads of state from America, the United Kingdom and Russia to discuss the ruling and reorganization of Europe post war.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin were the key attendees and the goal was to find a way to re-establish the remains of war-torn Europe.

Issues such as banking, monetary distribution and payment of accounts was a large part of the agenda as was the territories that each country would be responsible for.  A similar conference was held in Potsdam some 5 months later but on this occasion  Churchill was replaced by the newly elected British Prime Minister Clement Attlee and Harry S. Truman stepped in for Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Other items on the agenda were the hunting down of Nazi war criminals and bringing them to justice. A commitment by Stalin to participate in the U.N. and that Stalin agreed to give France an occupation zone but only on the basis that this territory was formed from the British that France would have a fourth occupation zone in Germany, but it would have to be formed out of the American and British zones and not from any section of the Russian zone.
