This item is a sweetheart’s brooch or pin given as keepsake to a loved one. The pilots wings encased within are have a cloth centre with gold and red gilded wings and crown.

This one one here is circa 1940’s and was no doubted gifted by one of our brave young airmen in World War II. It is in remarkable condition with the clear perspex front showing a mirror like finish.

The back has seen some of the painted cover flaked away but the main face is unmarked.

A truly beautiful example which is now over 70 years old.

History

The motto on sweetheart brooches and pins was often, “Go To Return”. The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the Air Force branch of the Australian Defence Force. The RAAF was formed in March 1921. It continues the traditions of the Australian Flying Corps (AFC), which was formed on 22 October 1912. The RAAF has taken part in many of the 20th century’s major conflicts including both World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More recently the RAAF participated in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The motto on the RAAF’s coat of arms is the Latin phrase Per ardua ad astra, which means “Through Struggle to the Stars”RAAF official siteRAAF Air Power Doctrine.
