Here is an extraordinary offer of a near new lapel pin from the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

It is in remarkable condition at over half a century old and has lost none of its shine.

Extremely light abrasive scratches probably caused from contact with other pins and brooches whilst in storage.

We have 2 of these pins currently this one which is like new and the other which is about 80 percent.

The high resolution digital image shows more tiny flaws than are visible to the eye. The pin looks wonderful.

Your chance to add a real rarity to your collection is here.

Quite a large pin. The squares behind the pin are 1 cm each.

History

The 1956 Melbourne Olympics was a landmark event in Australia.

It was an unusual event for many reasons.

Melbourne just managed to beat Buenos Aires by one vote to win the host rights.

Due to the very strict quarantine laws in Australia the equestrian events had to be held separately in Stockholm in June.

The very first electric foils were used in the fencing tournaments and the semi-automatic digital timing device was seen for the first time in the swimming.

The official opening was presided over by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh

The legendary Ron Clarke lit the flame and John Landy read the Olympic oath.
