History

The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international football tournament. It is scheduled to take place between 11 June and 11 July 2010 in South Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be the culmination of a qualification process that began in August 2007 and involved 204 of the 208 FIFA national teams. As such, it matches the 2008 Summer Olympics as the sports event with the most competing nations. This will be the first time that the tournament has been hosted by an African nation, after South Africa beat Morocco and Egypt in an all-African bidding process. This decision left the Oceania Football Confederation as the only confederation yet to host the FIFA World Cup. Italy are the defending champions. The draw for the finals took place on 4 December 2009 in Cape Town. The Australia national football team represents Australia in international association football competitions. Its official nickname is the “Socceroos”. The team is controlled by Football Federation Australia (FFA), which is currently a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and also an invitee member of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since 2006. Australia is a four-time Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) champion and has been represented at two FIFA World Cup tournaments, in 1974 and 2006. 14th is Australia’s highest ever FIFA World Ranking since the rankings were introduced in 1992. Australia topped their group in the 2010 World Cup qualification and became one of the first nations to qualify for the finals tournament without losing a match and only conceding one goal. In the 2006 World Cup Group F included the World ChampionsBrazil, Croatia, Japan, and Australia. Playing in their first World Cup for 32 years, the Socceroos came from behind to defeat Japan 3–1, and, despite losing 0–2 to Brazil, a 2–2 draw with Croatia was enough to give the Australians a place in the Round of 16 in a remarkable game where two players were sent-off for second bookings and one for a third booking by English referee Graham Poll. Australia became the first ever Oceanian team to reach the knockout stages. The Brazilians won all three contests to qualify first in the group, although their 1-0 win against Croatia was underwhelming, a goal late in the first-half by Kaká securing the win. Croatia and Japan went out of the tournament without a single win.
