SERIAL 5.226093

This is a remarkably good example of this note which was released by the National Debt Office on 12th August 1914 shortly after the outbreak of World War I on 28 July 1914.

The edges are good. Upper corners have light dog earing which was probably caused by note album hinges.

The stamp embossing is near perfect.  Overall a remarkably clean and nice example

Red seal with cross bloom watermark. This is the rarest of the One Mark issues from this era of Darlehnkasse banknotes.

History

Based on a previous type of Prussian bank notes the Darlehnskassenscheine were issued within the German Empire from 1914 to 1922. They were produced by the the National Debt Office in accordance Darlehnskassen Act of 4 August in the same year. These notes ran parallel to to the Reichs bank notes and the Reichs cash certificates.

They were not formally recognised as proper bank notes but none the less were accepted as legal form of payment by government agencies.

The Darlehnskassenscheine were backed by the legal lending of both industrial and agricultural goods they were however not exchangeable for Goldmarks.
