On offer here is a rather unique and interesting variance on the third release NPA folder for the bicentennial ten dollars bank notes.
It is the standard NPA folder but bears a sticker for the Qantas and Ansett Conference in Spain in 1989.
To my knowledge and after showing it around to some other dealers it is the only example anyone has seen to date.
Ansett is now a defunct airline which no longer exists and ceased operations under that name when it was placed into administration in 2001 after a financial collapse. It was formally underwent liquidation in 2002.
The bank note inside has the general release AA04 serial number which in itself is not unusual but the folder cover itself is certainly a rarity.

Design Details and Serial Number Sequence:
The worlds very first polymer banknote. Released in 1988 to celebrate the Bicentennary of Australia. This note had an extremely special features built into it as security against forgery being a hologram of Captain James Cook. It was a world first and makes these notes highly desirable as collectors items. Collectors value numerous variations of this note due to initial production problems.There were 3 releases of this note due to initial technical difficulties with the production techniques.
The first release AB10 – AB33 (with the first 2 digits of the serial number being either 93, 94 or 96) The note had a thin varnish over the hologram which proved to wear out very quickly. When the problem was identified the printing ceased.
The second release AB10-AB57 (followed by regular serial numbers) used the same prefixes as the first release but did not employ the 93,94,96 sequence after it. When printing resumed on this second run they applied a darker heavier varnish to the note which proved to work a great deal better.
The third release AA00-AA23 were released to the general public in blue coloured Bicentennial Commemorative $10 Note Folder. These are the most common on the market given that more people kept them as momentos and they did not suffer from the initial printing process errors of the previous two issues.
Obverse:This design included the sailing ship HMS Supply anchored at Sydney Cove with a depiction of the early colonials in the background. These people symbolise all those who have contributed to Australia. From the left we see the early settlers and to right the modern working man.
Reverse: Design includes portraits of the native population, the main picture is a young native youth with ceremonial paint, and in the background is a traditional Aboriginal Morning Star Pole also appearing are other Aboriginal artworks also commissioned by the RBA and a human like figure from the Dream Tme.Security Features:The paper design included a watermark in the white field of Captain James Cook, the watermark was also used in the last issue of pound banknotes. A metallic strip, first near the centre of the note, then from 1976 moved to the left side on the obverse of the note. Polymer issue includes a watermark or clear imprint of the coat of arms which is printed over. A raised image in the clear panel of wavy lines. Also for this issue fluorescent colouring was added to the serial numbers. A star with four points on the obverse and three on the reverse which join under light. Raised print and micro printing of the denomination name are included. The 1988 Commemorative note was the first issue to include a optically variable device of Captain James Cook who first mapped Botany Bay.
Ansett Australia, or Ansett-ANA as it was commonly known in earlier years, was a major Australian airline group, based in Melbourne. The airline flew domestically within Australia and from the 1990s to destinations in Asia. The airline was placed into administration in 2001 after suffering financial collapse, and subsequent organised liquidation in 2002, subject to deed of company arrangement.
The company was originally founded by Reg Ansett in 1935 under the name Ansett Airways Pty Ltd. He was already highly successful in the road transport business. So successful in fact that it threatened to undermine the profitability of the freight and passenger revenue of Victorian Railways. The state government passed laws which would effectively put private road transport operators out of business. Not one to be outdone, Reg Ansett established his own airline as aviation was not under state control but that of the federal government.
The Australian domestic airline sector was dominated originally by Australian National Airways (ANA) which was established in 1936 by a consortium of British-financed Australian ship owners. During the term of the Chifley Federal Government establishment of a state-owned airline to operate all domestic and international services was placed before the High Court of Australia but was over turned. Trans Australia Airlines (TAA) was set up to operate in competition with ANA.
The subsequent Menzies government which whole heartedly supported TAA wished to make sure that TAA did not end up with a monopoly on domestic services if ANA ever collapsed, as seemed likely at the time. The solution they reached was for Ansett to buy the ANA operation.
Ansett lost control of the company to Peter Abeles of TNT fame and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation in 1979, with Abeles taking operational control of the airline. Ansett expanded into New Zealand in 1987 via its subsidiary Ansett New Zealand after the Government of New Zealand permitted its operation in New Zealand airspace. In February 2000 Air New Zealand acquired full ownership of Ansett, buying out News Corporation’s stake for A$680 million, surpassing Singapore Airlines’s A$500 million bid.
Competition from Qantas and a succession of start-up airlines such as Impulse Airlines and Virgin Blue, top-heavy management and substantially overpaid staff, an aging fleet of aircraft the grounding of the Boeing 767 fleet due to a host of maintenance irregularities left Ansett seriously short of cash with losses of around $1.3 million a day.
A deal made in April 2001 for Ansett to purchase Virgin Blue was repudiated by Virgin chief Richard Branson in August. Singapore Airlines which was initially blocked from buying Ansett, was also prevented from investing further in Air New Zealand/Ansett by the New Zealand government. It then later declined to take up an earlier proposed deal to inject more than $500 million into Air New Zealand and Ansett after talks collapsed between the two.
In early September 2001, as the trouble worsened, the New Zealand government prepared to rescue Air New Zealand (eventually buying 83% of the company for NZ$885 million) but in the process it cut Ansett adrift. Despite public pleas, the Australian government refused to bail out Ansett. The airline, its name and its assets passed into history.
