As we all know, Mickey Mouse is one of the most famous cartoon characters in the world. The distinctive white gloves, high pitched voice and over sized shoes are images ingrained in people the world over. His debut appearance was in the film ‘Steamboat Willie’ in 1928. Walt Disney himself did the original voice for Mickey from 1928 until 1946 until studio work pressure became to much as his magic kingdom grew. Since then, only four other people have gone on to voice Mickey: first Jim MacDonald, followed by Wayne Allwine, and currently by both Bret Iwan and Chris Diamantopoulos. Mickey has had a formidable career appearing in more than 120 cartoons.  He ranks second only to Donald Duck in this regard. Most notably he was the first animated character to be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was given his star in 1978 to celebrate his 50th anniversary.

Some surprising Mickey Mouse Facts:

Mickey is estimated to be 2 ft. 3 inches tall and to weigh approximately 23 pounds!

Mickey’s official birthday is Nov. 18, 1928.

Walt Disney had always said that Mickey and Minnie are married but only in private. There was never an on-screen wedding to cement this fact. The man and woman that voiced Minnie and Mickey were actually married in real life.

The first words Mickey ever spoke in a cartoon were: “hot dogs!”

Originally, Walt Disney named Mickey “Mortimer.” But Walt’s wife convinced him to change it to “Mickey.” Mortimer ended up being the name of a new character — Mickey’s rival.

Throughout Mickey’s career, he’s worn a total of 175 outfits! (Minnie’s worn over 200!)

Despite his popularity, Mickey took a 30-year hiatus between films. His last cartoon, The Simple Things, premiered in 1953. He would not appear in another cartoon until 1983’s Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
