Within the series of credit notes, Hans Fleck created 4 sets of notes each with 4 denominations. 4 x 4 and hence the Quartett part of the title.  Like many notgeld or emergency money notes issued as Gutschein or credit notes they were made in the hope that people would collect them rather than redeem them and hence help the local economy to get back on its feet.

Valued at 25 Pfennig it was issued by a local stud farm as has the images of 2 horses being trained by a mounted lady on a third horse.

It is in lovely condition and is worthy as an addition to any collection.

History

An interesting little credit note here in this listing. It was issued in the City of Celle in Niedersachsen in the north of Germany about 270 km’s west of Berlin. Celle is considered to be the gateway to the Lueneburg Heath with a large collection of more than 400 Tudor style / half timbered houses.

Modern day Celle has a population of over 70,00 inhabitants but back when this banknote was printed it was only around 23,000.

It was the home of the Cambridge Dragoons Barracks from 1842 which was named after 1st Duke of Cambridge.  It was later used by the British troops after the Second World War until 1993.

Celle was also the site for one of the very first Karstadt department stores opened in 1929 by Rudolph Karstadt and the front design mimicked that of the department store on Berlin’s Hermannplatz.
