History

UNESCO World Heritage classification was endowed on the Church of St. Michael in 1985. It is a parish church dedicated to Michael the Archangel.

It was built in the Romanesque style beginning around 1010 when it was a Benedictine Monastery. it was not consecrated until 1031 when the construction work was completed.

In 1186 it was rebuilt and re-consecrated following a fire. Again in 1945 it was destroyed by a bombing raid and was rebuilt between 1950 and 1957.

Due to it’s medieval treasures and a rose bush which is said to be 1,000 years old it was awarded World heritage status.
