1990 GERMANY FIVE NEW STATES SILVER GOLD MEDALLION
The fall of the Berlin Wall was a major turning point for Germany and this beautiful silver and gold medallion celebrates the re-unification of Germany and the five new states created as a result.
These five new states which were previously cut off by the wall were Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Thuringia.
The medallion is pure 99.9 % pure sterling silver with 24 carat gold selective plating.
Like the other releases in this series they were an extremely low mintage at 5,000 pieces.
Historically these medallions are fantastic collectible and an item to keep to hand down to your children.
Any scratches or scuff marks visible in the picture are only on the plastic outer capsules. The medallion within is in mint uncirculated condition.
On 22 July 1990 a decision was made by German Democratic Republic by 14 East German districts (excluding East Berlin) to proceed with the unification treaty on 3rd October 1990. As a result the new areas created were Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Thuringia.
What was formerly referred to as East Germany which were then a part of the Federal Republic of Germany merged into the German Democratic Republic.
Each of the five new states were given a West German Government Aid Partner which were
Brandenburg to be looked after by Nordrhein-Westfalen
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to be looked after by Bremen, Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein
Saxony to be looked after by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria
Saxony-Anhalt to be looked after by Saxony
Thuringia to be looked after by Bavaria, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate
This was to assist with not only financial and taxation issues but also those of cultural differences
