History

Hessisch Oldendorf is a town in the Hamelin-Pyrmont district, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Weser, approx. 10 km northwest of Hamelin. The adjective “Hessisch” is used since 1905, to distinguish it from other towns named Oldendorf. Hessisch Oldendorf was part of Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel from 1640 until 1932.

The town offers many things. Hidden treasures, ancient traditions, historical sites, contemporary art, buildings of the Weser Renaissance and nature. Those who visit the town on the river Weser, encounter an eclectic town with an eventful history. Discover it by walking or cycling through picturesque villages, fertile valleys and evocative beech forests. The countryside around Hessisch Oldendorf shows the special charm of the Weserbergland: the river, the mountains, pristine nature, architectural gems and Romanesque architecture. Or how about a geological expedition in the past? In Langenfeld District lies Germany’s northernmost cave, the Schillat Cave which is certainly worth a visit. In the immediate vicinity of the cave the cliffs from Hohenstein open a wonderful view over the Natural Park Weserbergland.
