This is nice little triple set with two of the ten pfennig notes and one of the 25 pfennig notes.

The notes depict mythical characters from dwarves to hermits. As always the notgeld or emergency money produced so often during the period of hyperinflation was highly fanciful and was no doubt an attempt at levity in dark times.

the 3 banknotes here are all in good condition and priced to sell.

History

Ilsenburg am Harz has, like a lot of Europe, a long history.  Near the present day city are the remain of a castle built in 995AD which was built to secure and protect the hunting grounds of Emperor Otto III in the Harz Mountains.  The castle was handed over in 1003 to Henry II and was later transformed into a Benedictine monastery. A more modern castle was erected some years later but has long since been destroyed by fire. In 1545 the town developed the first iron works, a trade for which it would become very well known. During a visit from Tsar Peter I in 1697 the town became officially recognized and soon became highly prosperous. Ilsenburg became famous for its cast iron pieces and stoves. In the 18th century a new castle was built and it in due course began to attract tourists. A rail line was laid down in 1884 which helped to bring them in.  During the Second World war it was the site for a concentration camp using forced labour from the Italian military. Today the town has a population of around 10,000 people .
